By Gina Anderson
May. 23, 2024 12:00 am
The New London City Council met on May 13, 2024 with all members present. After the invocation, there was a public hearing on the proposed budget amendment for 2023/2024. There were no citizen questions or comments. They then approved Resolution #426 authorizing the budget amendment for FY 2023/2024.
In open forum, the council heard from Steve Detrick and Chad White. Both men are running for the Henry County Board of Supervisors. Detrick is running as a new member and White as an incumbent. Both men discussed concerns they have and the focus they would have if elected.
The council approved the consent agenda and then took up old business. They addressed the topic of the city’s donations to various nonprofit organizations. They discussed the city attorney’s response and the sample agreement. The council will utilize the sample agreement that clearly defines the public purpose for the donation when considering future contributions.
The Council took the following actions:
- Approved purchasing black and gold “New London Tiger Pride” banners with the Tiger head in full color. The cost is $1,040.00 to Maleo Custom Designs.
- Approved painting the exterior of the H.J. Nugen Library to Robert James for $4,500.00. The City will buy the paint.
- Approved Resolution #424 setting the date for a public hearing on the proposal to convey interest in real property to Tasty Tracts LLC.
- Approved Resolution #425 determining the necessity and fixing a date for a public hearing on the adopting of a proposed amended and restated urban revitalization plan for the citywide revitalization area.
- Approved Resolution #427 — the plat of survey for Auditor’s parcels “2024-011” and “2024-012,” New London, Iowa.
The council then took up the employee wage increase for FY 2024/2025. They debated between a flat dollar amount versus a percentage. The council directed Kasi to prepare a resolution to be approved at the next meeting giving the employees a 3% wage increase.
The meeting adjourned at 6:35 p.m. The next regular New London City Council meeting is June 10, 2024 at 6 p.m. in the City Office.
