Clark Elementary celebrates ‘Red Carpet Day’

Some years ago, Clark Elementary implemented the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program.
This is not a curriculum but a framework designed to support students in all aspects of their lives.
In addition to improving social emotional competence, academic success and school climate. it also improves teacher health and well-being.
Students are “rewarded” for all types of positive behavior from helping keep the school looking nice, showing kindness to mentoring other students. This reward is a slip of paper with their name and the good deed.
These slips are collected and at student assemblies ceremoniously dumped into the “PAW METER.” The Paw Meter is labeled with school wide rewards. When the number of slips reaches a labeled level, the event is scheduled.
Red Carpet Day is one of those reward days.
Students and staff dress up in their version of Red-Carpet clothing. A red carpet (paper) is installed from the classrooms to the Clark multipurpose gym.
The students file in passing through a gauntlet of well-wishers giving everyone “low fives.” After all had gathered, a short program is held noting the accomplishments of PBIS goals.
A notable part of this event tis that classrooms receive trophies noting their particular expertise. The teachers gladly receive the trophy in honor of their students.
Trophies were awarded to the following classes: Class Always Willing To Help Each Other — Mrs. Nelson’ Kindergarten; Class Always Willing To Go With The Flow — Mrs. Earhart’s First Grade; Class Always Kind To Classmates Gets The Class Cheerleaders — Mrs. Syfert’s Second Grade; Class With The Most Improved Readers — Mrs. Watt’s Second Grade; Hats Off to Reading — Mrs. Wenger’s Third Grade; Class With Never A Dull Moment — Mrs. Stromquist’s Third Grade; Class of Proficient Problem-Solvers — Mrs. Davis‘ Third Grade; Class of Future U.S. Presidents — Mr. Schmidt’s Fourth Grade; Class of Math Mystery Maniacs — Mrs. Olson’s & Mrs. Walker’s Fourth Grade; Class Full Of Future Picassos — Mrs. Miller’s Fifth Grade; Class of Creative Crafts People — Mrs. Engberg’s Fifth Grade; Class with the Most Contagious Smiles — Mrs. Scarff’s Kindergarten; Class with Great Storytellers — Mrs. Schmidt’s First Grade; Class Team Award — Mrs. Moore’s First Grade; Working Together Award — Mrs. McAllister’s — Second Grade. The competition was heated, but Mr. Palmatier was awarded Best Principal. He graciously accepted the trophy.
The program ended when the slips collected were placed into the Paw Meter to see if Clark students had earned the next activity. Sure enough there were plenty of excellent behavior slips and the Fun Day has been scheduled.
The students then exited down the red carpets back to their rooms. Additionally during the day each class came back to the front hall where a poster backdrop and a box of boas, masks and other festive gear was held.
Each student could enhance their appearance for a class picture with their teacher and their trophy. A great day for all. The guidance and unity of the Clark staff top to bottom is evident in the progress of their students.
