One of the most interesting fifth grade history units is the study of early explorers to the Americas and around the world.
After studying these men of all nationalities, each student selects a favorite.
Mrs. Miller changes the activity just a bit and allows recent explorers.
By expanding the study, space exploration and women explorers are added to the pantheon of individuals.
The students construct a presentation board, create costumes, write a short paragraph about the person’s adventures and accomplishments, and stand ready for visitors to the museum.
The marvelous thing about these “wax” characters is that they come alive as needed.
Visiting “tourists” are family members, friends, Clark classrooms and the interested public.
Exhibits fill the hallways leading to the fifth grade classrooms. The classrooms are used as well.
The most difficult part of the duties of the explorer is remaining wax like pose but the fun is contagious.
This year’s fifth graders chose explorers ranging from Leif Erikson to Amelia Earhart and Neil Armstrong.
