On May 19, members of the Class 2038 marched on to the stage of the Ron Coberley Auditorium. More commonly known as the pre-K class, these youngsters had completed the NLCSD preschool program and were ready to graduate, enter Kindergarten in the Fall of 2025 and begin 13 years of public education.
In past years, pre-K graduation was held during the day outside the Clark next to the playground. The graduation has always been a popular event but the teachers and administration noted that many times only one parent was able to attend this first milestone in a child’s education. The decision to move the event to 5 p.m. and indoors with seating for all was a success. It just so happened that the weather was extra cool and unpredictable this year so there were no worries about last minute changes in venue. A substantially larger number of family members were able to attend.
The graduating class demonstrated some of the things they learned and sang joyously for the audience. Some were a bit overwhelmed to see such a large group waiting to applaud their efforts. After the graduation program, refreshments were served in the MS/HS Commons. Parents received the portfolios containing their child’s work for the year. Opportunities for pictures abounded.
Public preschool is offered throughout Iowa and it is free. The program is voluntary for Iowa four-year-olds. The program has helped many students entering Kindergarten. It is not mandatory for children to attend but the skills learned in preschool ease the transition to formal group education.
