Firefighters Josh Schumacher and David Ackles hosted the Cub Scouts, Pack 71 at the New London Fire and Rescue on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 17. The Scouts had an great time being around the fire trucks.
Fireman and pack leader Schumacher showed the Cub Scouts the equipment they use and the gear they wear. They even got to try on the gear, much to their delight.
They also talked about what to do in case of a fire, and emphasized the importance of having an emergency plan in case of fire.
After trying on the gear, the young scouts took turns sitting in the fire truck.
They learned a lot, as did the adults who were in attendance. For instance, did you know approximately 92% of Iowa's 850 fire departments operate on a volunteer basis, surpassing the national average of 70%?
Thank you to these volunteers who help keep our community a safe place to live and take time to share their knowledge with the our children!
