On Saturday, March 23, Charles Lorber gymnasium welcomed Tiger supporters to a live auction, a silent auction, and a free will donation meal. The auctioneer, Jason Denning, did a great job as he encouraged top dollar bidding as well as fun. Clerk Jodi Jackson helped greatly as well.
At the end of the fundraising event, the total proceeds added up to $27,782. There were 150 auction items, 17 silent auction items, and cash/check donations from people unable to attend. Mrs. Nelson’s Food class cooked and served the delicious Maid-Rites and deserts.
Auction items are always fun and useful. Spirited bidding is great entertainment. This year a Caitlin Clark Memorabilia Basket sold for $1,300. Koni Lounsbury, a New London graduate and well known pastry whiz, made a strawberry-rhubarb pie that yielded $900. Watching and listening to the action, a young man, Branson, turned to his grandmother and asked why people were spending so much money. Grandmother, Carol Linkin responded with these unforgettable words:
“We aren’t here for a deal; we are here to make a difference.”
These words truly reflect the allegiance of the New London community to its children.
Dollars for Scholars is an important organization. Scholarships are provided for any New London graduate and graduates can apply for help for four years. Dollars for Scholars began in October 2001 in New London. Since that time, $158,00 has been awarded, with 412 students receiving their share of the aid. This year, each graduate is eligible for $500.
Students who are asking for help in years 2-4 are eligible for $300. Scholarship really isn’t the correct word for the monetary support provided, there are many expenses beyond tuition. The organization has provided such things as welding helmets and tools for students pursuing technical and vocational futures. The scholarships are very easy to apply for. Online resources are used. Mrs. Lair and Mrs. Housman are available to help students. Graduates with unique needs should not hesitate to ask. Dollars for Scholars and New London teachers will do their very best to provide.
