This important fundraiser happens only once a year.
However, the money raised at this function will impact the future of every New London graduate.
The word scholarship is mistakenly thought to be for college students. In the case of New London’s Dollars for Scholars students can apply for fund to pursue vocational, professional, or general college certificates.
Oddly enough, in 1958 Dollars for Scholars was begun by an optometrist, Dr. Irving Fradkin, in Fall River, Massachusetts as part of his campaign running for the School Board in that community.
It is the nation’s grassroots scholarship program. The idea is to harness the power of the community. Small donations made by many community members are used to empower students in their own backyards.
Because the community is in charge of the donations, they are then in charge of how the scholarship money is used.
The widening of availability of these dollars ensures the study of all needed services are eligible for help. New London has retained the original name but the idea has gone through a number of names over the years.
Auction items may be seen in the lobby of the Danville Bank or on Facebook. Be sure you use the proper name New London, Iowa, Dollars for Scholars.
There is a multitude of items and pocketbooks of all sizes can participate. Activities are provided for children so the whole family feels welcome.
The Food & Nutrition Class gets a chance to improve their skills in cooking for a group and preparing an attractive buffet. The competitive bidding increases the fun for all.
Items on display at Danville Sate Bank, New London will be auctioned Saturday night at the Dollars for Scholars scholarship fundraiser.
