The Henry County Historic Preservation Commission has released a new Book in their Henry County History series. “The Cemeteries of Henry County, Iowa” is an important compilation of work from many sources who have worked over the years documenting burials from the early 1830s onward. There is even mention of Native American sites in the Rumored Burial sites portion. The book is divided into three sections: First, general information about cemeteries and specific topics; Second, Cemeteries by Township lists all known cemeteries and burial sites; Third, Rumored/Unknown site are referenced. The cost of this Book is $30. Plan to purchase a copy when you visit the museum during the Holiday Stroll.
The Museum will be decorated for Christmas and the Holiday Stroll on November 27. The Methodist Women’s Holiday luncheon will be November 29. Plans for the Holiday Stroll were completed. Dustin will set up the train at the depot for youngsters to enjoy. The Holiday Stroll Scavenger Hunt table will be at the Depot as well. Burge Cemetery will have a bake sale in the front of the museum the night of the Stroll. Pam Finn will be asked to play the piano as visitors enjoy the Dover creamed chicken.
2023 saw the completion of many of the window projects. The second-floor windows were replaced, repaired, and painted. The paint crew also used a foam product to stabilize the wood frames before painting. Much of the wood is original to the early 1900 construction. The Depot had boards replaced and painted. 2024 plans have begun. Darlene Lutes is planning Dover Sunday programs. The DAR will meet at the museum in July. Grant applications will be written. A new entry ramp railing is desperately needed. After winter break, the Board looks forward to planning a 2024 year filled with activity.
