Fifty ‘Turkey Baskets’ made before Thanksgiving break

Every Thanksgiving, the entire school district gathers food items and donations to fill baskets for community families. This year fifty baskets were assembled. The term “basket” is a misnomer. There is far too much food to fit in a basket and many boxes and plastic sacks are used instead.
Turkeys are roasted ahead of time. Faculty and staff pick the turkeys so they are ready to eat. They are frozen and stored in the Clark kitchen until the day of basket delivery. FCS students bake pumpkin pies to be added as well.
On the day before school lets out for the holiday break, students, alumni, and volunteers pitch in and assemble the baskets. Some families elect to pick up their baskets while teachers deliver some to homes.
It is hard to create a list of donors for fear of forgetting someone. A huge Thank You goes out again to the amazing New London community. This community believes and practices, “It takes a village to raise a child.” This African proverb conveys the reality that it takes many people to provide a safe, healthy environment for children. As the holiday season progresses, may the entire world recognize the importance of the security of our children.
