The football season ended on Oct. 13 at English Valleys. The boys fought hard and put 40 points on the scoreboard. At half time they led 34 to 28. Unfortunately the second half didn’t go the Tigers’ way. The final score was English Valleys — 52/Tigers — 40.
It was a tough season with injuries and low numbers, but it was not without lessons. Every boy learned what it takes to play varsity football. They found the will to finish a difficult season and made us proud with their tenacity.
Individual stats from the game:
- Gavin Menke-Bailey — 14/29 passing for 220 yards/4 TDs/2-two-point conversions/2 rushing TDs on 28 carries and 141 yards/9 tackles
- Cale Wellington — 4 receptions for 59 yards and 2 TDs/4 tackles
- Logan Franklin — 5 receptions for 94 yards and 1 TD/6 tackles/1 interception
- Michael Raines — 5 receptions for 67 yards and 1 TD/32 yards on 15 carries/4 tackles
- Paxton Lindsey — 3.5 tackles
- Nic Loyd — 5.5 tackles
- Israel Lemley — 2.5 tackles
- Griffin Swanson — 1.5 tackles
Prayers were answered for freshman Riley Raines as he left the field in an ambulance. He was taken to the UIHC ER where, according to his parents, it looks like a trap sprain and likely a concussion. It appears that he will hea. Thank you!
Kelly Bailey, mom of QB Gavin Menke-Bailey, gave the New London Journal permission to share her eloquent summary of the season.
”Another season in the books. This one was hard,“ she said. ”A rebuilding one they called it. Rebuilding or not, these boys stepped onto the field every week and worked their tails off, left it all on the field. What we lacked in size and numbers, we made up for in heart. Season ending injuries for three of our boys hit us hard, but they stepped up and became the best encouragers. Many went out of games with injuries and kept coming back. All of these boys made us proud!”
I couldn’t have said it better!
