Fourth biannual Career Fair enables students looking for a productive future

The first Career Fair was held at NLMS/HS in 2018. It was put on hold through the pandemic but is back stronger and better than ever. This winter’s fair was the largest and most successful to date. Jennifer Campbell and the NLHS National Honor Society worked with District staff to make the day a success. Over 55 career paths were offered. Technology, healthcare, arts and trades were just a few of the paths to explore.
Students signed up for sessions they were interested in. A schedule was then put together offering each student six of their choices to attend throughout the day. The beginning of the day was a bit chaotic as students lined up to receive their schedules. Each session focused on a different set of careers.
Presenters offered many insights. Students left each presentation knowing how much education beyond high school is needed or the skills needed for a beginning worker. Additionally, how and where you can obtain these skills and how far from home do you have to go for these opportunities.
The presentations were engaging. While some presentations were speaker-oriented, a number of sessions were less formal, and students engaged in roundtable-type discussions. Students were able to gain a deeper understanding of each career under this format. With the advent of technology, presenters could share their expertise from a great distance away. One presenter was in Colorado. An impressive feature for everyone was finding out just how many opportunities are close to New London.
Around the perimeter of the Lorber gymnasium, a career fair was in full swing. Many colleges and universities, military recruiters and businesses were available to hold conversations with groups of students as they toured the tables.
The highlight of the conference was held at the end of the day. The Alumni Panel shared their personal journeys, challenges, and triumphs since graduation from New London. Students could easily relate to these alumni and were inspired by their stories.
Ms. Campbell, all the staff and students send a huge thank you to all the presenters and volunteers that made the day possible.
On Facebook, Ms. Campbell noted, “The future is looking bright. Keep dreaming big, exploring new horizons and chasing those goals!”
