Friends of Geode continue restoration of Geode State Park Concession Stand

A great workday at the concession building at Geode occurred Saturday, Aug. 10. The last wall is up. This wall separates the storage area from the public area. Many thanks are due to volunteer work from Mark Wesley, Bob Hesler, John Fullenkamp and Dave Smith. Jill Fullenkamp brought lunch and kept everyone going.
A small but dedicated group continued the work on Saturday Aug. 17. The goal was to finish framing around windows and doors as well as work on the soffit, fascia and gutters on the back side of the building.
Everyone is anxious for the electrical work to begin. Friends of Geode (affectionately known as FOG) has a devoted membership. The group has held many fundraising events such as the YAK Attack and the Geode Challenge Trail Races. Each event gets FOG closer to the goal of reopening the concession stand. The new concession stand will rent watercraft, sell prepackaged food items, bait and drinks.
It is important to remember that Friends of Geode also are involved in helping the DNR, Ulf and Drew restore Geode to a first-class recreational site. They support tree planting in the campground and beach area and provide firewood for both areas. Support is needed from everyone. The Geode Challenge Race is coming up Oct. 19.
A little reminder about the race: it isn’t too early to register. Although registration on UltraSignup doesn't close until a few days before the event in October, our T-shirt vendor has given us a cutoff date for requested orders. If you sign up by Sept. 19, you will be guaranteed the size T-shirt you request on your UltraSignup registration. All registrations on UltraSignup after 9/19 and in person on race day will be able to pick a T-shirt based on what we have left at packet pickup (and on race day). We'll be sending in the order on the 19th next month for all who are registered by that date. We will also order extra T-shirts in sizes S-XL. But once we run out of shirts — we'll be out of shirts.
Currently eight runners have signed up for the event: four signed up for the 5k, one for the 12k and three for the 25k! Join these brave souls quickly. This year there are youth prices featuring a $15 discount! Join us on the trails and plan for a fun day — rain or shine!
