John Fullenkamp, Vice President, sent out a request for volunteers to help out at an under-construction concessions stand Sunday, April 6, as the new front and back doors were ready to be installed. Professional construction advisers, Joel and Jeremy Grant of Grant Construction were available. Beginning at 11:15, Dave Smith, Mark Wesely, Bob Hesler and John all arrived to help. The front door is now installed and the framing around it is completed.
Volunteers are needed again next Sunday, April 13. Joel and Jeremy are again able to provide their expertise. The rear door and frame are next on the list. The front window designed to be used with the cash register and counter is also ready to be installed. The job will take several hours. Hopefully several more workers will be available. The workday will begin at 11 a.m. Mark Wesely, 319-239-6013 will be the leader of the crew
Once the doors are installed, the electrical work can be finished. It has been a challenge to work in the dark all these months. Lighting will be a great plus. After the inspection, the foam insulation can be sprayed. Then it will be time to install the dry wall. The project has come a long way. Friends of Geode is hoping to have the project finished this summer. Help is needed every step of the way.
“Get out to see the park as it is just starting to turn green,” Fullenkamp said. “The fish are biting and soon, there will be mushrooms popping up.”
There are fishermen on the lake in boats and some fishing from the jetties. Families were at the park as well. One young man had his RMC truck running along the sidewalk.
Over the winter, the Friends of Geode have continued working and planning. Unexpectedly, Hope Haven decided to stop taking cans and bottles for recycling and deposit. One of the fundraising efforts are the can/bottle collection bins. Saturday, Feb. 15, about a dozen volunteers met at John’s house to sort the bags. A nice warm porch was available. It is quite a job to sort the collection properly but with many hands and lots of jokes the work was done in just a few hours. The funds go to the betterment of the park and also help keep the trash and litter contained.
The next General Friends of Geode Meeting will be Sunday, May 4, 2025 at 2 p.m. at the Bob Dodds Insurance Meeting Room in Danville. Attend and learn of the plans for the 2025 recreational season. Election of officers also is part of the agenda for this meeting.
