Friends of Geode hold Work Day

Saturday, July 20, the Friends of Geode held a Notable Workday. When the group formed many years ago, a major purpose was to restore the concession stand located at the Beach Area. The exterior of the building had been repaired. All the wiring, dry wall and furnishing were removed. On Saturday, work began on the inside. The Friends volunteers were able to framed the walls and get ready for the electrician. Once that is done, insulation and dry wall can be added. Each workday gets the building closer to re-opening.
The Executive Council of the Friends has visited with other concession sites such as Lake Darling and Lake Wapello. A garage door has been installed as the first step to providing rental kayaks, canoes and possibly paddle boats. A defined storage area can be built after the electrical work is done.
A special thanks has been extended to Justin and Joel Grant with Grant Construction and Masonry out of Burlington. It is a huge help when pros donate their time, expertise and advice. The Friends volunteers who donated their time were - Mark Wesley, John Fullenkamp, Bob Hesler, Herb Grinstead, Dan Mueller, Dave Smith. Many thanks go to Jill Fullenkamp who brought lunch. It was very much appreciated.
There are many projects that the Friends of Geode have at Geode State Park. With the support and help of the DNR, community businesses and volunteers, these are ongoing. HyVee donated 5 trees to the tree planting project. Two pin oaks and 3 plum trees were added to the beach approach. The next event planned are the Geode Challenge Races.
