As the 2025 YAK Attack date approached, the extreme heat predictions became worrisome. This popular event is sponsored by the Danville Lions and hosted by the Friends of Geode. With fingers crossed, the volunteers arrived at the Beach Shelter house Friday evening to help unload the pickups with all the items needed for a successful day on the lake.
Registration began Saturday, June 21, at 10 a.m. For $25, participants received a T-shirt, a floatie, a boogie board and a chance to win a kayak or a fishing rod. Friends of Geode merchandise became available at 11 a.m. Grilled hot dogs and sides were available for lunch. This year five destinations were set up around the lake. Paddlers arrived at the site to find a letter. They were then challenged to unscramble the letters and find the magic word. All the proceeds support the completion of the restoration of the concession stand.
Jason McDonnell, Friends of Geode volunteer, said it best, “The last two days have been a blast! He has been ever present and describing cleaning up the beach as a “blast” may be a little beyond what most consider fun. Jason enjoys putting Lake Geode and Geode State Park on everyone’s return list. He wants all to enjoy the park the way he does.
Joining Jason, Friends of Geode volunteers brought four wheelers and equipment to help people launch their kayaks. With the heat and the wind, the trip with a kayak from the parking lot to the lake could be daunting. Finally at noon, the horn sounded. Kayaks tried to gather at the beach for a group picture. However, the lake jealously called everyone to begin paddling. Enjoying the friendly competition and the challenge of the weather overcame all other thoughts.
Big thank you to everyone that came out to Geode yesterday for the Yak Attack! Even with the heat and wind, fun was had by all. Special thanks and appreciation go to
Rural Water for donating the bottled water for the day, the Danville Lions Club, DNR personnel and all Friends of Geode members and volunteers.
