Friends of Geode workdays continue

A small but dedicated group reported to the concession stand on Saturday, September 7. Our professional helpers from Graber Construction were on site. Their expertise ensures that our work is square, plumb and sound. The hope is that the interior stud walls will be completed and the electrician will be able to come and wire everything. It would really be great to have lights inside to help as work continues. After wiring, insulation can be added and dry wall installed.
The soffit and fascia have been completed at the back of the building. The front and eve ends are next on the list. The crew worked from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Lunch was provided and the crew enjoyed taking a break and looking at all the progress that has been made.
When the lake restoration was started, it was planned that the former concession building at the beach would be demolished. After meetings between the DNR and the Friends Group, it was agreed that if the Friends could raise the funds, the building would be saved.
The interior of the concession building had to be completely dismantled and everything removed. The concrete block inside was preserved. The outside of the building has historic Anamosa (Stone City) dolomite limestone blocks. This too is preserved. Many remember fun days and teenagers at Geode Lake and a return to those days is part of the plan with boat rentals, food and bait.
Coming up soon is the Geode Challenge Race. This year 5K, 12K and 25K runs are planned. Sign up is going well. Now for the weather to cooperate. When you get a membership to Friends of Geode, think about volunteering for one of the many tasks and activities the group provides to Geode State Park and its increasing recreation value.
