Forty students, parents and community members met with Miss Brittney at the Nugen Library, Tuesday, June 25, The challenge — creating an acrylic painting. The subject — “Blue Whale Under the Stars.” This painting was a little more advanced than usual so the Library staff asked that attendees be fourth grade and older. Younger students were accompanied by a guardian or parent. Registration was required. Miss Brittney and her volunteers established an environment that enabled all participants to succeed. Inexperienced as well as expert artists produced a painting to share with family and friends.
What is Guided Painting? A guided painting class is one where you are led through every step in creating a painting. You do not have to have any artistic ability to make a great painting in this type of class. There are seven supposedly simple steps to follow when taking up painting. First consider why you want to take up painting and what you want to get out of it. Second, pick your medium: acrylic, oil, watercolor. Third: get your supplies. Fourth get familiar with the fundamentals of art. Fifth, decide what you want to paint first. Sixth create your first painting. Seventh — review and improve.
Miss Brittney provides answers to these questions with her class. Acrylics are chosen because they are a very forgiving medium. The subject matter is chosen and the atmosphere is fun and forgiving. One is surrounded by others experiencing the same issues. In this case, a template of a whale was provided so the worry of an unwhale-like creature appearing on the canvas was diminished.
The Lorber Insurance Agency generously sponsored the event. All canvases, paint and brushes were provided. No one had to worry about the cost of the endeavor. Step seven — to review and improve — is now up to the person. Guided painting is offered by Miss Brittney two or three times a year, so one can continue learning and having fun.
