Aug. 17, 2 p.m. Joel Garretson will share some of the history of his family farm. The program will take place at Henry County Heritage, 403 West Madison Street, Mt. Pleasant.
Joel Garretson, descendant of the original owner, resides on the Garretson Family Farm, which was established in 1837. It is now known as East Grove Farms.
Joel carries the name of his ancestor and original owner. The farm was established in 1837. It has the distinction of being the oldest family farm in Iowa. The family has now occupied the original homestead for 187 years. The original Joel Garretson was a conductor on the underground railroad and had a $500 price on his head. It is said he had a fast horse.
East Grove Farms held a popular open house for the recent Preserve Iowa Summit held in Mount Pleasant. The family is committed to saving many historic features of Henry County as well as the Queen Anne family home. Plan to attend and enjoy a personal view of the beginning of the State of Iowa.
