Homecoming week is over and it was a fun week for the students K-12. Lots of activities were planned for each day.
The homecoming kickoff is traditionally on Sunday with each class wearing their class colors, and this year was no different. Freshmen were in pink, sophomores were in NL gold, juniors wore white, and the seniors were in black. In kickball, the high school students played each other, and it was the seniors who came out on top.
The week had dress-up themes for each day. Wednesday was Boom Night. It kicked off with the homecoming parade. Lots of team floats and fire trucks led the parade down Main Street and then it wound its way back to the school.
The homecoming royalty and their parents were introduced, and then it was time for beefcake volleyball and powder puff football. The seniors were victorious in both.
Friday dawned and it was “spirit” day for the Tigers with most decked out in the traditional black and gold.
The afternoon had competition games in the gym. The results were as follows courtesy of Mrs. Bliven:
- Seniors won blind volleyball
- Juniors won dodge ball because of Jayden Bergman’s epic performance!
- Juniors won four corners because Cale Westerbeck is that good.
- Freshman Tucker Syfert crushed the pie eating contest in 30 seconds. It was impressive!
- Juniors and seniors were in the finals of basketball but time ran out.
Then all eyes turned to the football field. The homecoming royalty was reintroduced and the student body’s choice was announced: the 2024 Homecoming queen was Morgan Jones and the king was Gavin Menke-Bailey.
A bit of interesting trivia is that Morgan’s mom, Lena Miller Jones, was the 1990 queen and her aunt Rachel Miller Huegel, was the 1997 queen. Her grandmother, Nan Riepe Miller, and grandfather Ron Miller were on the 1964 court. Gavin’s grandmother, Gail Strawhacker Bailey, was the 1968 queen, and dad, Matt Bailey, was on the 1992 court.
The game ball was flown in by helicopter courtesy of MedForce 2 out of Great River and was received by the four senior members of the team. The icing on the homecoming cake was the Tigers’ victory on the gridiron. They were victorious 54-38 over HLV after being tied at the half 20-20. The dance at the new gym was the final homecoming activity.
The Class of 1974 was on hand for their 50th class reunion and from pictures they posted, it sure looked like they had a great time reminiscing. #OATAAT!
