1:30 p.m. – This is the 60th anniversary of the Alaska earthquake. Virginia Ekstrand will share her experiences of life during and after the earthquake. Her daughter, Gisela, was one month old at the time. The Arctic Health Research Center where Virginia worked survived but the street next to it opened up and slumped away. All the roads were closed, the airport tower collapsed, and only one way to communicate with the outside world was available. A unique combination of panic and helpfulness coursed through Anchorage.
