Sept. 20-27 New London Homecoming Week
Plan for a busy, fun week as New London prepares for its Homecoming. Every day will have important activities. A schedule of events will be published soon.
Sept. 21 — Pioneer Cemetery Day
2 p.m. The Henry County Pioneer Cemetery Commission presents Pioneer Cemetery Day featuring Jefferson County Cemeteries. This event is being held in the Events Room at the Henry County Heritage Center, 403 W. Madison Street in Mt. Pleasant.
Sept. 22 — Autumnal Equinox
Fall officially begins Sunday, September 22. Fall colors are expected to be good this year. Time to start planning a trip to your favorite spot to watch the change.
Sept. 22 — Concert in Swedesburg
Swedesburg Lutheran Church invites you to a free organ concert featuring music by artist Stephen O’Baker. Mr. O’Baker is an organist at Faith Lutheran Church in Clive, Iowa. Join us for an afternoon of delightful music at 1897 140th Street in Mt. Pleasant. This concert is free and open to the public. There will be a free will offering for the Organ Fund.
Sept. 22 Dover Sunday presents program on the Alaska earthquake of 1964
1:30 p.m. — This is the 60th anniversary of the Alaska earthquake. Virginia Ekstrand will share her experiences of life during and after the earthquake. Her daughter, Gisela, was one month old at the time. The Arctic Health Research Center where Virginia worked survived but the street next to it opened up and slumped away. All the roads were closed, the airport tower collapsed, and only one way to communicate with the outside world was available. A unique combination of panic and helpfulness coursed through Anchorage.
Sept. 23 — Henry County Public Health “Happy Feet Program”
1-4 p.m. Henry County Public Health is holding their “Happy Feet Program” at the Public Health office; 106 N. Jackson St. in Mt. Pleasant. Every Monday afternoon Henry County residents will have access to a variety of services including foot care, blood pressure checks and referrals for $10.00. A registered nurse will be available to assist with diabetic patients. Please call 319-385-0779 to schedule an appointment (required).
Sept. 27 — Dover Board Meeting canceled
There will be no Dover Historical Board meeting Friday, September 27. Be sure that you are ready with your items for the Red Flag Road Race Breakfast. Thank you.
Sept. 28 — Henry County Heritage Trust with the MP Community Theatre
2 — 3 p.m. A SPECIAL collaboration with Mount Pleasant Community Theatre. Henry County Heritage Trust Presents “Voices from the Past.” Visit the Henry County Heritage Trust, 400 W Madison St, Mt. Pleasant, IA. Doug Snavely, as Samuel Luke Howe and Carrie Muhs as Belle Babb Mansfield portray these early residents. Come hear some amazing stories in Mount Pleasant’s history. Actors are dressed in period attire. FREE — Donations appreciated.
Sept. 28 — Holiday Stroll offers a hot breakfast to the public on red flag race day
7 — 10 a.m. Did someone say pancakes? Head over to the New London shelter house for a hot breakfast, including biscuits n gravy, pancakes, eggs, cinnamon rolls, breakfast casserole, muffins, & drinks. This breakfast is a free will donation with all proceeds going toward the annual New London Holiday Stroll! While dining, you can enjoy the Red Flag Horseless Carriage motor tour!
Sept. 28 — Annual Statewide Volunteer Day
Iowa State parks have set Saturday, Sept. 28, as annual Volunteer Day, when Iowans are invited to lend a hand at several state parks and forests hosting volunteer events. Join the park staff to help care for Iowa’s natural areas, freshen up campgrounds and facilities, and spend time outdoors. Cleanup efforts will be unique for each park depending on needs, and may include litter pickup, staining or painting buildings, removing invasive species, rebuilding picnic tables, harvesting prairie seeds and more. Lake Geode and Lake Darling are both planning activities for volunteer day.
