Oct. 8 — Henry County Conservation — ‘Into the Unknown’ with Frozen
6-7:30 p.m. Go “Into the Unknown” as you explore the park trails in the dark. Don’t get “Lost in the Woods,” but instead learn how to be a “Fixer Upper” for the animals of the forest. Afterward, join a Frozen party and play fun games in the Oakland Mills Nature Center. Anyone who dresses up as a character gets a high-five from the naturalists. Bring a flashlight! The event will be educational and fun, not scary. It’s an outdoor event, so keep an eye on Facebook for cancellations or rescheduling. Preregistration is appreciated, not required.
Oct. 12-13 — Sac & Fox Lapidary Club ROCKTOBERFEST
Oct. 12 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and Oct. 13 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Jefferson County Fairgrounds, 2606 W. Burlington St., Fairfield. The Sac & Fox Lapidary Club helps many local organizations display important mineral collections. One of their recent projects is the Iowa Rock, Mineral and Fossil display at the Henry County Conservation Nature Center. Something is available for everyone: minerals, geode cracking, jewelry, cabochons and much more.
Oct. 14 Fellowship Cup Community Room
10-11 a.m. Meet with RSVP Pen Pal Orientation in the Fellowship Cup Community Room. This year RSVP is teaming up with the New London fourth graders. Volunteers will write the first letter due Oct. 25 and only be required to write a letter every other month. At this meeting they will go over the rules for writing letters to students and fill out necessary forms. Oct. 15 Union Block
7 p.m. The Harlan — Lincoln House in Mt. Pleasant presents Mourning First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln. Actress and researcher Laura F. Keyes is performing as Mary Harlan Lincoln as she sorts through possessions left by her mother-in-law, the widow of President Abraham Lincoln. Learn more about this interesting person on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at the Union Block, 111 W. Monroe Street in Mount Pleasant. Lamont Molding LLC of Mt. Pleasant is sponsoring this event, and it is free of charge.
Oct. 20 Dover Museum
1:30 p.m. The Dover Museum at 213 W. Main Street in New London features a local Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad Engineer who will discuss “Operation Lifesaver.” Operation Lifesaver is the railroad safety program for the general public. All are invited to this free event and encouraged to bring your children. Learn how to Stop, Look, Listen, and Live!
Oct. 20 Story Time in Swedesburg
1 p.m. It’s Story Time in Swedesburg with Chad Filley, a Scandinavian storyteller who is both hysterical and historical! This event will be held at the Swedesburg Parrish Hall, 201 Academy Avenue, and is a free will donation. Coffee, apple crisp & ice cream will be served.
Nov. 11 — Veterans Day (Date Correction)
Veterans Day is observed annually on Nov. 11. Once known as Armistice Day, this day now honors all military veterans of the United States armed forces.
