VFW Post 7841 Auxiliary is collecting school supplies
VFW Post 7641 Auxiliary will collect donated school supplies for NL school district students at the post at 802 East McKinley. A tub for supplies will be inside front door for drop off. If you'd like a list email sniper2@mchsi.com or contact Brenda at the elementary school. Join this effort to make sure every student has the supplies needed to start the school year!
Aug. 7-10: Sweet Corn Festival
This popular Southeast Iowa event provides sweet corn to eat and a full schedule of activities each day. Check out the schedule and visit West Point for fun, good food, art in the park and a carnival.
Aug. 9 Farm Crawl
9 a.m.-4 p.m. The 16th Annual J40 Farm Crawl in Van Buren County explores the Heart of Iowa as you travel through the Villages of Van Buren County on J40! 8 a.m.-noon Amish Breakfast — Lebanon Amish School. The Farm Tours feature flowers, livestock, greenhouses, fresh produce. Homemade Treats include baked goods, cheese, mead, maple syrup & honey, /a Courtyard Market is set up in downtown Keosauqua with local vendors.
Aug. 9: Hunter Education Classroom Course
8 a.m.-4 p.m. Hunter Education will be held at Aim High, Salem. This course is required for Iowa young hunters to get their license. For more information visit gooutdoorsiowa.com or call Dan Henderson 319-653-1636
Aug. 11: Get your student ready for school — Back to School Health Fair
4-7 p.m. Henry County Public Health is hosting a "Back to School Health Fair" on at the MPCSD Central Campus Gym (100 W. Franklin St., Mt. Pleasant) This is a one-stop shop for back to school immunizations (required for Pre-K, Kindergarten, 7th & 12th grades), dental screening (required for Kindergarten & 9th grade), vision screening (required for Kindergarten and 3rd grade), and lead testing (required for Kindergarten).
Cash-only sports physicals are also available. Plus, there will be community resource tables and giveaways. If you are unsure if your child needs any of the above requirements, please feel free to reach out to our New London school nurse Lindy Williams. She may be reached over the summer by email at lindy.williams@nlcsd.org.
Aug. 11: Henry County Conservation “Sourdough Starter” class
This is the last day to register for this class. Henry Conservation Department Board member Tony Brown. The class will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. on Aug. 18, however, registration is required. Learn the history of sourdough and get all of the tasty details!
Aug. 14: “Lessons of the Holocaust”
5 p.m. Brad Wilkening will present “lessons of the Holocaust” at the Mt. Pleasant Public Library Civic Center Meeting Room. People who join in this event will receive a free admission voucher for the Anne Frank Connection and World War II Railcar Museum in Danville, Iowa. The Mt. Pleasant Library is at 307 E. Monroe Street.
Aug. 16: “History of Mount Pleasant’s Mental Health Institute”
2 p.m. Talisa Jacobs will present “History of Mount Pleasant’s Mental Health Institute” at the Henry County Heritage Trust at 403 W. Madison Street in Mt. Pleasant. The museum is open from 1 p.m. — 4 p.m.
Aug. 17: Waterpalooza
4-7 p.m. A FREE community event will be held at the New London Christian Church, 2770 New London Road. Everyone is welcome. Bounce houses, water balloons, dunk tanks, games and food. Bring a towel and a chair!
