VFW Post 7841 Auxiliary is collecting school supplies
VFW Post 7641 Auxiliary will collect donated school supplies for NL school district students at the post at 802 East McKinley. A tub for supplies will be inside front door for drop off. If you'd like a list email sniper2@mchsi.com or contact Brenda at the elementary school. Join this effort to make sure every student has the supplies needed to start the school year!
Aug. 16: “History of Mount Pleasant’s Mental Health Institute”
2 p.m. Talisa Jacobs will present “History of Mount Pleasant’s Mental Health Institute” at the Henry County Heritage Trust at 403 W. Madison Street in Mt. Pleasant. Come and learn about the history and beginnings of Mount Pleasant’s Mental Health Institute. Opened in 1861, this huge complex was once known as the Insane Asylum and the Iowa State Hospital, Mount Pleasant’s MHI was one of only four in the state. At one time, MHI was one of the region's largest employers. FREE — Refreshments — Questions? (319) 217-6042 The museum is open from 1 p.m. — 4 p.m.
Aug. 17: Waterpalooza
4-7 p.m. A FREE community event will be held at the New London Christian Church, 2770 New London Road. Everyone is welcome. Bounce houses, water balloons, dunk tanks, games and food. Bring a towel and a chair!
Aug. 18: Henry County Conservation “Sourdough Starter” class
5-7:30 p.m. Henry Conservation Department Board member Tony Brown will teach a class on sourdough. Learn the history of sourdough and get all of the tasty details! Registration Required.
Aug. 18: Fellowship Cup holds annual school supply distribution
10 a.m.-2 p.m. The Fellowship Cup in Mt. Pleasant is holding the annual school supply distribution in the community room, 203 N. Jefferson Street. Basic school supplies for each grade level will be provided and there is no need to sign up.
Aug. 21: New London “Meet Your Teacher” and 6th Grade Orientation
5:30-6:30 p.m. Summer is nearly over!! Clark Elementary "Meet Your Teacher Night" is a great time to come in, meet the teachers and drop off school supplies. We look forward to seeing you all and to another great year! 6th Grade Orientation is also scheduled at the MS/HS auditorium. First day of school for students is August 25. Enjoy the rest of your summer break!

SAVE THE DATE — meet volleyball, cross-country and football players who are starting their seasons for the 2025-26 school year. GO TIGERS!!
Aug. 22 — 24: Salem Old Settlers
Salem Old Settlers has a full weekend schedule. Advance carnival tickets for Joe’s Old Fashioned Fun Carnival are on sale at Kramer’s for a huge discount. You can purchase advance tickets until 4:45 p.m. on Friday, August 22nd. Also, be sure to register for the Bags Tournament! $20/team and you can call Heidi at 319-931-9741 for details.
Aug. 24: Walmart Warehouse Yard Sale
7 a.m.-2 p.m. The Walmart Warehouse at 1501 E. Mapleleaf Drive in Mt. Pleasant is having a yard sale. The sale is open to the public and all proceeds will go to the Children’s Miracle Network. and benefit the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
Aug. 24: Dover Sunday “History of Geode State Park”
1:30 p.m. Dave Smith will present a program on the “History of Geode State Park” Save the date.
