Jackson Blow’s Big Adventure
Jan. 18, 2024 12:00 am
By day he is a typical seven year-old, but there are other times when he turns into Jackson Blow, motocross racer. One would never guess that he has three years of racing under his belt. Yes, that’s right, he started when he was four.
On Jan. 4, Jackson and his family flew to California so he could race in the 25th KTM Jr Supercross, the stadium version of motocross. This event isn’t one where a rider just shows up. Jackson, after an application process, was selected to race based on three videos he submitted. They included him performing starts and jumps plus a personal interview.
The race was in Anaheim, California in a sold-out Angels Stadium. Jackson got to live the life of a pro for a day. A bike was provided for him plus a special gear package that included a racing jersey, racing pants, gloves, a helmet, and a hat. He took to the track and raced the opening Monster Energy Supercross race with the professionals.
When asked for his thoughts after the race, he said, “Meeting all the professionals was really, really fun! When I was on the track it made me feel like I was a professional rider. They did everything for me that they do for them. The track was gnarly. There were ruts that were deeper than my bike. I got a really good start running 3rd and went down in the sand section and ended up in 12th place. It was cool just to be able to be out there. Not many kids get the chance to do that.”
Jackson said he hadn’t been nervous at all and thought it was awesome having all those people in the stands cheering. He spent the rest of the day signing autographs, racing on the same track, receiving free gear, and hanging out with some of his favorite riders that include Christian Craig and Jett Lawrence. He even got to play football in the parking lot with one of his favorite riders and his son. It was an experience he and his family will never forget.
While Jackson and his family were focused on the race, they found time for a little recreation. They visited Huntington Beach and of course Disneyland. He and his brother received tickets for Christmas from friends. They flew home on January 8.
Jackson has raced motocross from Michigan to Florida and now California. He has raced Loretta Lynn’s AMA Amateur Nationals (Tennessee), Ponca City MX (Oklahoma), and Mini O’s Motocross (Florida) which are the big races. He races year around and currently is racing an indoor series in Mendota, Illinois.
His interest in racing came from a trip to St. Louis when he was four. Watching the kids race supercross was something he wanted to try. The rest, as they say, is history. He has a practice track at Jeanette Kadel’s farm outside of New London where he practices as much as the weather allows.
Jackson is the son of Brady and Parrish Smith and the grandson of LaVita Hibbs and Ed and Felecia Blow. He is big brother to three year-old Jutte Smith. He is currently a second grader at Clark Elementary and one can only imagine his “what I did over Christmas break” presentation when he got back to school. It certainly qualifies as a BIG adventure!
