NEW LONDON — The JH Tiger football team played host to WACO Oct. 2. The opening kickoff went to the Warriors, but they fumbled on their own 10-yard line, and it was recovered by Johnathan Gallup. The Tigers scored on a 3-yard run by Kellan Porter. Dylan Burden scored on the 2-point conversion. Burden made two more quick touchdowns, and after a successful 2-point conversion, the Tigers led 22-0. Cole Swanson recovered a fumble in WACO’s end zone for another Tiger TD. Kendall Connelly scored on the 2-point conversion. Halftime score was 30-8.
The second half, Porter scored two rushing TDs and a 2-point conversion. Connelly had a rushing TD and a 2-point conversion while Reed Lindsey added another two points. The final score was 54-20.
Defensively, Swanson had seven tackles, Tucker Syfert had five, and Emmett Garza added three. The entire line made it hard for WACO to move the ball, another total team effort.
Oct. 5, the Tigers traveled to Winfield to give the Wolves a rematch. New London received the opening kickoff and Kellan Porter ran it back for a score. Reed Lindsey added two to make it 8-0. Tucker Syfert recovered a fumble on W-MU’s opening drive. Porter and Lindsey turned it into eight … then did it again. Halftime score 24-14.
Scoring in the second half were Kendall Connelly and Dylan Burden. Porter, Connelly, and Cole Swanson each added 2-point conversions for a 54-42 final score.
Defensively, Swanson had two sacks and a tackle for a loss. Liam Garvey blocked a punt and had three tackles with one for a loss. Syfert and Riley Merschman each had three. Others with tackles were Emmett Garza, Zander Amburn, Owen Severson, Porter, and Lindsey.
The Tigers are 3-0 and have Don Bosco and Moravia left on the schedule.
Varsity Tiger Football
On Oct. 6, the Tigers hosted the Moravia Mohawks (6-1). It started out rough and ended that way as the boys went down to defeat, 74-14. They never quit and never backed down from the challenge this season has presented, with injuries and low numbers. They have made their school and their community proud the way they have handled every obstacle this season presented.
This night was Senior Night for our football players: Michael Raines, Griffin Swanson, and Josiah Denney. They led a team of mostly freshman and sophomores with enthusiasm and dignity and provided examples for them to follow next season. They will be missed! No individual stats were available at press time.
The Tigers play English Valleys on Friday the 13th at English Valleys. Go Tigers!
