Ms. Kati DeLlanos, elementary grades K-2 vocal music teacher, planned a Spring concert showcasing her students as they sang songs about space. The children also had a great deal of fun with songs that demonstrated that they understood beat. Parents, families, and friends were delighted as the kids demonstrated how much they had learned and accomplished during the school year.
Kindergarten began the concert with three songs: Steady Beat, Bingo, and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. Steady Beat had a bit of a rap edge. The students did a great job keeping the beat. The audience recalled singing Bingo when they were young, and one could see them mentally helping as the letters were dropped from the word in time with the beat and all correctly. Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star completed their performance, reminding everyone of the time when all these youngsters were babies.
First grade entertained everyone by dancing in place to Disco Sensation. One is amazed at how limber the children are as they rise up and down while twisting and singing. Why in the Sky talks about all the wonderful things one can see in the sky beginning with clouds. The vision of soft white clouds is welcome after a spring of dark, forbidding layers. The children concluded their show with The Planet Song. Somehow it is always easier to remember things if they are set to music. This piece is updated to recognize that science has now declared the solar system has eight planets and helps students remember their names. The listeners appreciated the astronomical reminders as the kids accomplished their music goals.
Second grade presented Ants in My Pants, People Change and Blast Off. It takes little imagination to see in one’s mind’s eye the dance routine used for Ants in My pants. This fun dance was followed by People Change — a song helping children see that everyone needs to be understood and treated with kindness. Blast Off returned everyone to earth but thinking about that desired voyage into space as the second grade finished its performance.
As a special treat, the entire group of K-2 children returned to the risers to sing Zooming Into Space.
The grade 3-5 students with Mr. Arnie Anderson, presented a musical. This year, “It’s A Hit” was chosen. This musical of innings and winnings was a perfect choice as T-ball, baseball and softball begin to occupy the thoughts of sports lovers. The number celebrates good sportsmanship, teamwork, problem solving and learning how to win and lose with dignity and class! A new girl in town has joined the boy’s baseball team. No problem. But wait! She wants to be the pitcher? That has never been done before, at least not in this town! Through five innings, the cast gets to play the parts of many favorite baseball players throughout history, and they learn how to be true all-stars whether the score shows a win or a loss. Each scene was accompanied by a song with appropriate lyrics. The story is told through student addresses to the crowd, short acting vignettes, and of course songs. The songs sung by the entire group are Scene 1: “Play Ball,” Scene 2: “You’re at Bat” and “Strike Zone,” Scene 3: In A Pickle” and Scene 4: “All Stars” Scene 5: “Play Ball” a reprise. Great performances were given throughout the play. At the completion of the musical the audience made its way to the high school auditorium for the grade 6-8 portion of the concert.
