In “the Old Days,” Grandma and Grandpa’s house was filled item after item waiting for a new use. This “squirreling” was considered a holdover habit from the depression. Today, Grandma and Grandpa would be leaders of the modern Upcycling movement.
Recycling and Upcycling go hand in hand. Recycling takes old materials, sends them to processes which breaks them down into new materials that can be used for other products. Upcycling (creative reuse) takes old materials and transforms them into something new and better than what they were before.
Miss Kim at the New London Nugen Library held an afternoon of creative fun. She searches many sources for her ideas and finds Pinterest Upcycling ideas helpful. Major criteria in her search include items of interest to children and safety. Many volunteers help the children with their projects. Several tables were prepared. Each table had one upcycle idea and held all the items necessary to complete the new toy or article. Miss Kim created a sample product and a poster for each table showing imaginative uses of the item to upcycle. The difficult part for children was deciding where to start. The best part happened as the creations went home for Mom and Dad to see.
