Friday, April 4 from 5:30-7:20 p.m. the New London Lions will hold their annual fundraiser, “Breakfast for Supper.” Travel a short distance to the Clark Elementary Cafeteria and fill up on pancakes, sausage and a beverage of your choice: coffee, milk, juice, ice tea and water. This meal is a free will donation.
The Library will feature a special story walk during the event with a chance to win your own copy of “If You Give a Pig a Pancake” by Laura Numeroff. Ms. Numeroff has written many “If You Give a ” books. Children love this series. Its rhythmic text is perfect for beginning readers. Many giggles and requests to “read it again” compound the fun. In this case a little girl tries to keep up with a little pig and its adventures eating a pancake.
There are many organizations in New London that work very hard to help the school and community meet many of there goals. Unfortunately, the organizations are not always given the credit and recognition they fully deserve. The New London Lions Club truly lives up to the organization’s motto: “We Serve.” This small but mighty group quietly and steadfastly works for the good of all.
Founded in 1917 by Melvin Jones, a Chicago businessman, the Association of Lions Clubs quickly became International when In 1920, the Border Cities Lions Clubs in Canada joined. Local groups support a number of programs. Most of the community knows of dedication of the Lions to sight conservation. However, the list of programs is quite extensive and includes hearing and speech conservation, diabetes awareness and youth outreach to name just a few.
“Lions” is actually an acronym for Liberty, Intelligence, and Our Nations’ Safety. There are over 49,000 clubs and 1.4 million members. Over 200 countries and regions are represented.
