1950
- The senior class trip itinerary has been published. It’s from May 29 - June 3. May 29-New London to Chicago; May 30-Chicago to Detroit; May 31-Detroit to Niagara Falls to Buffalo; June 1- Buffalo to Cleveland; June 2- Cleveland to Huntington, Indiana; June 3-Huntington to Burlington to NL by school bus.
- The Wesleyan Guild picked new officers. Pres.-Cleo Harper, VP-Dova Tompkins; Sec.-Yoma McKinnon; and Treas.-Ernestine Timmons. Committees: Music-Esther Wessel; Flowers and Cards-Mary Harper. Dorothy Kilbourn, and Lorene Ritchey.
- Senior Interviews this week: Don Farrington, Howard Knott, Harold Massey, and Earl Miller.
- At a track meet in Ottumwa, the 2-mile relay team set a new school record of 9:12. Clarence Mumme broke his own school record in the half-mile run of 2:14 to 2:13.2. The 440 yard rely record was 49.00 set by Corrick, Byers, Preuss, and Adolphson in 1948. The new record is 48.8. Bob Harper got second in the football throw.
- Jimmy Ritchey, who underwent a tonsillectomy at Burlington hospital on May 8, was returned to the hospital.
- This week at the Alamo: “Sands of Iwo Jima” starring John Wayne and “Rock Island Trail” starring Forrest Tucker.
1975
- The NLHS concert band received a division I (superior) rating. This was the band’s 13th I rating in 14 state contests entered during the last seven years. The band has 68 members.
- The Boy Scouts held their Grand Prix Derby on April 29 a the HS cafeteria. First place went to Mark Coberley, second place to Glenn Totemeier, and third to Robbie Wick.
- Senior Interviews this week: Richard Stearns and Dave Steward.
- The mile relay team of Janet Wilson, Marcia Lorber, Shiree Davey, and Debbie Ryan broke the school record with a time of 4:27.2.
- Citizens of Tomorrow this week: Nikole Danelle, 2 ½ month old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Van Amerongen and Brandi Lyn, 2 ½ year old daughter of Peggy Willey.
2000
- City employee Steve Sturgeon is planting summer flowers along Main Street.
- Graduation will be May 21 at 2 p.m. at the HS gym. Joe White will be the speaker.
- This week’s winner of the Chamber of Commerce Hometown Pride award is Larry and Shirley Miller for their home at 200 Orchard Lane.
- Obituaries this week: Wesley Willey, Perry Martin, E. Viola Higgins, and Hazel Moore.
- Senior Interviews this week: Kristen Huddleston, April Hollingsworth, Amanda Clark, Anne Friedrichsen, and Michael Springsteen.
- Brock Henderson was among the students named to the Dean’s List at Judson College last semester. To be considered, a student must have at least a 3.55 GPA.
- Sophie Helen Lounsbury was born to Joe and Koni Lounsbury on May 6. She weighed in at 7 lbs. 3 ½ oz. Grandparents are Marlene and Larry Reid and Darlene and Don Lounsbury.
2015
- Coen Fitzpatrick raised $1001.00 for the American Heart Association through Jump Rope for Heart.
- Obituary this week: Helen Brink Bishop.
- Ryan McLerran (7th), Mason Porter (8th), and Gabe Carter (7th) were math bee participants in Burlington. Ryan and Gabe placed 15th in the 7th grade bee and Mason took 2nd in the 8th grade bee.
- Senior Spotlights this week: Avery Jacobs, Trace Holland Boyles, Ethan Ray Hendrickson, Michaela Specketer, Kyle Hill, and Tristan James Kadel.
