1950
· Janet Grinstead was surprised with a party on her 8th birthday. Attending were Luella Swailes, Frances Ibbotson, Dorothy Peterson, Mary Jane Helmerson, Michele Bell, and Keith Grinstead.
· Bobby Alton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Alton, underwent a tonsillectomy. He is home and doing fine.
· Virginia Lee Hanson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Hanson, was awarded the Faculty Book prize for outstanding academic work from the school of nursing at Washington University in St. Louis, MO.
· This week at the Alamo: “The Great Missouri Raid” starring Wendell Corey and Ward Bond and “Sunset in the West” starring Roy Rogers and Trigger.
· After removing stored corn from an old crib to new one, Mr. and Mrs. George Blint Jr. and son Dale along with help, killed 60 rats. The Blints live on the Petzinger farm northwest of New London.
· Firemen were called to the Northwest Glove factory at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, but fortunately it was a false alarm. Several were working on the night shift and Joe Colton was burning boxes in the incinerator when an alarm was turned in.
· Next week at the Alamo: “The Mating Season” starring Gene Tierney and John Lund and “Mrs. O’Malley and Mr. Malone” starring Marjorie Main and James Whitmore.
1975
· Firemen were called out Sunday night about 10 p.m. when an old farm house located on a farm owned by Gerald Lehman south of town was on fire. Lehman had plans for demolishing the old house. Some will remember the home as one of those on the former Clark farm, which was later given to the school district.
· Robert Alton observed his 30th year with the Iowa Telephone Company. To commemorate his 30 years of service, Mr. Alton will be presented with a gold ring decorated with two diamonds, a ruby, and the company insignia.
· Four hundred to five hundred attended the open house for the new health care facility.
· The final band concert of the summer will be held on Thursday, July 31. Three former students who are music majors in college will be the featured soloists. They are Jeff Edwards, vocalist; Lewis Worden, trombone; and Jerry McKinnon, guitar.
2000
· Kristin A. Upton, the Health, Family, and Consumer Science teacher at New London High School, completed the Excellence in Teaching Institute on the Drake University campus. It is an intensive one-week program dedicated to developing school-to-work transition skills.
· The Chamber of Commerce Hometown Pride award winners this week are Jim and Paula Turner-Coates for their home at 304 W. Madison St.
· The Class of 1980 held their 20th class reunion. Door prizes were awarded to Marla and Wes Willey for being married the longest; Karen Winter for traveling the farthest; Nicky Boughton for looking the most like her senior picture, and Mike Berkshire for looking the least like his senior picture.
· Obituary this week: Mary Elliott, mother of G.A. Elliot
2015
· The New London softball team’s state tournament experience ended on a positive note, as they won the 3rd place trophy.
· Marvin Hillard, Phoenix, AZ, was a visitor in New London for several days to celebrate his sister, Roberta Ball’s birthday on July 18th.
· 4-H’er Kalayna Durr won a trophy with her bucket calf at the Henry County fair.
· Pre 4-H’er Lily Syfert posed with her goat “Sparkle” as she waited to compete in the Farm Bureau non-competitive show during the fair.
· 4-H’er Camryn Lair received Grand Champion Market Heifer honors at the Henry County fair.
· Talent show contestants Kaitlyn Lee, Megan Lee, and Aliyah Christensen had their picture taken with Bill Riley Jr. at the Henry County fair.
