1950
- Meet your neighbors this week are Mr. and Mrs. Paul Tonkinson and family.
- Mr. and Mrs. Lou Nugen have been married 50 years. They received many gifts and cards.
- Jean Edwards underwent an appendectomy at Burlington hospital on Monday evening.
- Aug. 2 has been set by the city council when bids will be opened for a firetruck for New London.
- No taxpayers appeared before the board to protest the proposed budget. Ralph Eckey and Donald J. Bell audited the school’s books for the year and found them correct. J.O. Bell is now the school treasurer succeeding V.Z. Breneman.
- This week at the Alamo: “Ambush” starring Robert Taylor and “Free-for-all” starring Percy Kilbridge.
1975
- Class of 1935 will celebrate their 40th class reunion on Sunday Aug. 18 at Ramey Hall. Everyone should bring a covered dish. Call Fern Davey or Ramona Wiley if attending.
- Longtime resident, Justus Piper, 78, died suddenly on Wednesday morning, August 6.
- Randall Allen Lamm and Steve Davey, ages one and thirteen, celebrated their birthdays on Sunday, Aug. 5 at the home of Velma Davey. Those in attendance for dinner included Mike Strawhacker, Shiree Davey, Kent and Sheila Lamm, and Mrs. J C. Parsons. Afternoon guests were Mr. and Mrs. Burton Thornburg, Marcia Thornburg, Regina Buchholz and Lisa Chapman and friends.
- Four hundred to five hundred attended the open house for the new health care facility.
2000
- The Chamber of Commerce Hometown Pride Award winner this week is Lucille Eckey of 407 N Elm St.
- Volunteers staffing the museum in July were Linda Farnsworth, Wayne and Gwen Moore, Leonard Schweitzer, Dee Heitmeier, Rhonda Mixon, Caroline Lehman, Bill McCabe, Gina Anderson, Jens Lee, Glenna Voyles, and Chester Coleman.
- Obituaries this week: Florence Swailes, Larry Van Stavern, Donald R. Wallingford, Zelda VanNice, and Richard Tillman.
- Donald E. Angstead and June M. Cosgrove are engaged. A January wedding is planned.
- The Garden Club will meet at the home of Linnea Wellington on July 28. Pat Chapius will be cohostess.
2015
- Superintendent McAllister announces that he will retire at the end of the school year.
- Caroline Lehman named Iowan of the Day.
- Obituaries of the week: Paul R. Hebbeln and Jerry W. Darbyshire.
