Looking Back
1950
- Mrs. Margaret Flam, Mrs. Lorraine Geary, and Elenore Davey entertained at a miscellaneous shower honoring the bride-to-be Betty Pollock.
- The city issued six building permits this month: Denver Brown-a house on N. Walnut St.; F. N. Reppe-a house and garage on S. Pine St.; Frank Patterson-house on E. Main St.; Arthur Underwood-additional room to his house; Les Cook-an addition to his home; and Oscar Mayer Co.-an office room and scale house north of the Vern Blanck house in the east part of town.
- This week’s “Meet Your Neighbor” - Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Tolander and their 13 children.
- Miss Betty Preuss, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Preuss of New London became the bride of Robert Wettach, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Wettach of Mt. Pleasant.
- Mr. and Mrs. Claude Noel and boys were Sunday visitors in St. Louis, Mo.
- Mr. and Mrs. Dave Marshall and family will spend the week-end with Mrs. Marshall’s sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Denney in Leavenworth, Kansas.
- On Wednesday evening, Mrs. Ralph DeSpain entertained in honor of her husband’s birthday. Guests were Mr. and Mrs. Willis DeSpain and Brian, Mr. and Mrs. Glen DeSpain, Mrs. Clara DeSpain and Lorraine, Mr. and Mrs. John McClure, Mrs. Lucille Wright and Don, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Harper and Bob and Dolores, and Rita, Annette, and Sonja.
- This week at the Alamo: “Riding High” starring Bing Crosby and “East Side West Side” starring Barbara Stanwyck and James Mason.
1975
- Candy Kelly and Jolene Davey will present a demonstration at the Iowa State fair after being chosen at the Henry County fair. They are members of the New London Lassies.
- Bob Gray, at last report, was still in Iowa City for observation and further tests.
- The New London pool will close for the summer on August 15. Starting August 25, it will be open 6 to 8 p.m. on Mondays with the exception of Labor Day.
- Brandon Scott Gittings, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Gittings, will turn three on August 9.
- The New London Tiger Band was the featured marching band at the Adventureland Park.
- Pastor and Mrs. Ian Armstrong and Chris and Elissa have returned from a trip to Mr. Armstrong’s native land, England.
2000
- The New London Chamber of Commerce will feature Hawkeye legend Jess Settles at their fall dinner extravaganza.
- Kaitlyn Wright, 9, daughter of Dwayne and Andrea Wright, showed the grand champion market hog at the Henry County fair.
- Capt. Jeremy J. Fulk, age 21, was fatally injured during a training exercise at Camp Pendleton, CA.
- Three vie for the two seats open on the school board. They are Sid Schmitt, Mike Westerbeck, and Kelly Kadel.
- The Chamber of Commerce Hometown Pride award winner this week is David (Surrell) and Marjorie Thomas for their home at 225 S. Pine street.
2015
- New London resident Sierra Callis-Job has joined A Hair Off Main after graduating from La’James International College in Iowa City.
