1950
· Mrs. Margaret Mehler motored to Thomas Jefferson school near St. Louis, Mo., where she met her son, Frank who accompanied her home for the weekend.
· Forrest Burkhart and Dr. Perry Haist left for a week’s vacation in Lander, Wyoming, where they will visit with the former’s brother-in-law, Merle Moore, and also hunt elk.
· Mrs. Maynard Miller and Donna Jean left Tuesday for a visit with Paul Valentine, at the parental home in Unionville, Mo.
· Meet Your Neighbors- Mr. and Mrs. Roma Sliger and sons.
· John McKinnon, president of the Chamber of Commerce, said that A.D. Hayes will be spraying for flies for the last time this season.
· Three very happy young ladies were introduced as Homecoming queen and attendants. Jacque Sue Harper and Monica Simmons were attendants and Leona Prehm was queen. She was accompanied by crown bearers, Sheila Williamson and Pete Kilbourn.
· The queen and the football captain, Bob Harper led the first dance at the Homecoming dance.
· This week at the Alamo: “Winchester ‘73” starring James Stewart and Shelley Winters and “Perfect Strangers” starring Ginger Rogers and Dennis Morgan.
1975
· The fall sports banquet is set for Nov. 4. Noble Boyd will serve as the Master of Ceremonies.
· There were visitors at Geo-Sonics this week. Soren Fehrn and Jan P. Nielsen, who do business with Earl Smith are representatives of Einer Fehrn International located in Copenhagen, Denmark.
· Ryan Anderson, 2 ½, brought a substantial cauliflower into the Journal office. It weighed 6 ½ pounds. Grown by his dad, he wanted to see if anyone had ever brought that size cauliflower in before. He was assured that it was the biggest they’d ever seen. Ryan is the son of Bob and Gina Anderson.
· The city election has three names on the ballot. Incumbents Jack James and Clarence Reid are opposed by Mike Dickey.
· Hal Piper, a student at Kirkwood College, Cedar Rapids, spent the weekend at the parental Charles Piper home.
2000
· Linda Sue Miller, an elementary teacher at Clark has been named in “Who’s Who Among Teachers.” Congratulations Ms. Miller!
· The VFW Auxiliary celebrated the 15th anniversary for tacos sales at the VFW.
· The obituary this week: Jeanette Woline.
· Seven students have been inducted in to National Honor Society (NHS) this school year. They are Steve Blow, Jennifer Cline, Clint Fedler, Katie Meyer, Dawn Schisler, Matt Walker, and Lyndsay Worden.
· The Danville — New London soccer team will participate in the state tournament in Muscatine on Nov. 3-4. New London players are Jordan Smith, Robert
Halbach, Walt Harper, Chase Smith, Suzanne Meyer, Ethan Miller, Bryan Walker, Cory Strothman, and Katie Meyer.
· Senior Tigers celebrate a successful victory in volleyball. They are Corina Schropp, Lyndsay Worden, and Brittony Williamson.
2015
· Obituaries this week: Anna M. Blunk and Dayton L. Thornburg.
· The NLHS Class of 1954 held there 61st class reunion. Those in attendance were Frank Hobbs, Jim Wilke, Ken Putney, Dick Davison, Gary Blanck, Ken Rhodes, Judy (Wise) Bond, Joan Mallams, Dick Breuer, Marilyn (Wright) Burke, Sherry Piper, Ruth Ann Kannegiesser Berkshire, and Connie (Casins) McFall.
· With elections looming, the New London MS 8th graders have been learning a about the democratic process in Mr. Bence’s social studies class.
· Laurie Hempen won 3rd place on Oct. 24, at the 27th Annual Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue in the dessert category. Four desserts received a perfect score of 180 points. First place was chosen by a random drawing of all four. Laurie’s 3rd place finish won a yellow ribbon and a Jack Daniel’s trophy. Her winning dessert was carrot cake cheese cake with candied carrot curs.
