1949
- While playing football at the Hanson home, Benny Hilliard, 10-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Hilliard, broke his leg. He was first taken to Burlington Hospital and then to Iowa City for further treatment.
- Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Burkhart, Sara Jane and Shirley, spent the weekend with the Kenneth Moore family in Farmington.
- Benner Food Store’s ad featured: bacon @ 53c a lb.; 20 lb. box of apples @ $1.39; 10 lg. grapefruit @ 35c; one lb. can of Salmon @ 65c; and cream corn-2 cans @ 29c.

- This week at the Alamo: “Give My Regards to Broadway” staring Dan Dailey and “Driftwood” starring Walter Brennan, Natalie Wood, and Dean Jagger.
1974
- Mayor Orville Kilbourn proclaims the month of January 1974 as the 1974 Alien Address Report Month for New London following the lead of the State of Iowa and the Federal government.
- Clair Dunbar, 67, unexpectedly died while at work at the E. G. Staats Co. on December 26. He leaves behind two sons and four daughters, including Christie at home.
- Jeff Ruschill and Sharlene Broeker were chosen Jack Frost and Susie Snowflake at the NLHS Christmas Dance. Attendants were Cheryl Craig, Jo James, Sherry Kerr, Jeri Schroder, Phil Byrum, Terry Leitch, Joe Prottsman, and Mike Stodgell.
- Connie Calloway, Houston, Texas, spent the holidays with her mother and brother, Mrs. Kay Calloway and Craig.

- Gus Levi Arnold was born Dec. 29 to Heidi and Shane Arnold. Local grandparents are LaVonne and Roger Fulton and Vicki and Charles Arnold.
