1949
• The poetry contest, sponsored by the high school English department, included these entries “Thank You, Noah Webster” by Janet Preuss, “The Brook” by Waunita Smith, and “The Milkman Called on Tuesday” by Genivere Hanks.
• From the records of the county clerk, the population of Henry County through births and deaths has increased by 16 in 1948.
• Select soloists for the upcoming concert include: Cornets - Suzanne Wessel; Clarinets - Leona Prehm; Flute - Genivere Hanks; Alto Sax - Bob Wright; and Trombone - George Elliott.
• This week at the Alamo: “The Best Years of Our Lives” starring Myrna Loy and Frederic March and “Black Bart” starring Yvonne De Carlo and Dan Duryea.
• Mrs. Harold Pease will be hostess to the Mary Elizabeth Missionary society of the Presbyterian church. Mrs. Justus Piper will assist.
1974
• Hal Piper, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Piper, was promoted to the rank of Yeoman 3rd Class in ceremonies on the USS Midway.
• This week’s Senior Spotlight: Kathy Whitson.
• Darren Shay Hovell recently had a story and poem published in the school magazine. He is a third grade student in Texas. Last year he was a student of Mrs. McNeeley at Clark Elementary.
1999
• Obituaries this week: Nettie Williams, Laurence L. Coen, Donna Brownell, and Charles E. Weber.
• Mr. and Mrs. Mark Chiri welcomed a son, Reno Gable, on February 16. He weighed 9 lbs. 4 oz. He joins Nic, Jeret, Logan, and Caitlin.
• Wrestlers Justin Garvey (189) and Nate Henderson (160) qualified for the state tournament.
2014
• Kyle Hill, in his inaugural year of racing at 34 Raceway in the Sport Mod division, won three heat races and captured a feature win.
• John Siegel will be inducted to the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s Hall of Fame for his many years of coaching wrestling.
• Obituary this week: Darla Johnson.
• New London 5th grade class portrayed historical figures. Aiden Pealer was James Cook, Reed Kempker was Magellan, and Morgan Kenel was William Clark.
• Senior Spotlights this week: John Knapp, Tyler Shinkle, Kienan Scott Stanbary, and Katie Lee Kirkpatrick.
