Looking Back

1949
· Said about the 1949 Tiger football squad, “They are out to win this year following a year when all the fans saw at the games was a ‘study in inertia.’” Many of the same players who last year were listless and indifferent to the pleadings of the coaches to get in there and fight, this year want to end the season in the upper bracket.”
· Reporting to school this year were 453 students K-12.
· Mr. and Mrs. Dale Totemeier and Cheryl, spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Houghton, Des Moines.
· Editor Wessel wrote, “Three of our prominent professional and business men have died prematurely from heart aliments since the war. First was Claude B. Noel, Sinclair Filling Station operator, then Ralph McKinnon, veteran oil man, and now the youngest of the three Dr. Mehler. All three could truly be termed war causalities.”
· There will be a reception at the Methodist church Tuesday evening at 7:30 for the school faculty, and honoring Rev. McDade’s return as pastor for another year.
· Earl Drewer appeared before the city council Tuesday evening in behalf of Clarence Lange, F. W. Walter, and himself, asking for the extension of a water main to the three homes. It seems like the city fathers will make it a shared project between the city and the home owners.
1974
· Nearly 500 area farmers and New London Framers Co-op patrons were on hand for their annual “Pre-Harvest” barbeque, held in the co-op dining room, or known to others as the old lumber yard building.
· All members of the town council, Mayor Orville Kilbourn, Clerk Fern Davey, and attorney Bob Hansen were all present at the town council meeting.
· New faces at NLHS this year are foreign exchange student Lobeida Alvarez, Tim Gholson, Linda Weber, and Justin Holder.
· There will be a reception welcoming the teachers of New London schools on September 15 at Ramey Hall. Everyone is invited to attend.
1999
· Homecoming Royalty 1999 are Queen candidates Jenny Dahl, Susan Wick, Michala Alden, Erin Lyles, and Rachel Chrisman. The King candidates are Mike Springsteen, Pat Henderson, Adam Richardson, Josh Myers, and Evan Osborne.
· Zeke the drug dog, aids NL police and Henry County Sheriff in drug arrests.
· Tara Alderson and Mark Glaha announce their marriage on October 23. Felecia Fuson and Edgar Blow announce their marriage on Sept.18.
· Obituaries this week: Lloyd Andries, William Fehse, and Phenix Mueller.
· This week’s Hometown Pride Award goes to Don and Judy Gaylord on 104 Kennedy Street.
· The New London-Danville football team beat Highland-Lone Tree 24 - 14.
2014
· Open house activities are planned for Homecoming.
· The following board members were elected officers: Laurie Hempen, President; Travis Benz, VP; Dennis Carter, HC Conference Board Officer; Shane Mettler, Voting delegate; and negotiation committee - Hempen, Lindsay Porter, Carter, Benz, and Mettler.
· After 32 years at the H. J. Nugen Library, Linda Geer is retiring. Also retiring are Karen Brown and Jeri Lyles who have worked at the City office.
· NL volleyball defeated Danville 3 - 0.
