1949
- Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lundin entertained Mr. and Mrs. Verne Blanck to dinner Sunday for their birthday anniversaries which occurred last week.
- Dr. and Mrs. E. J. Lessenger left for St. Louis to attend the Mississippi Valley Medical Association convention. Dr. Lessenger is on the board.
- According to the federal tax report, licenses have been bought by five clubs in Henry County for slot machines: New London — VFW Club.
- During the past week, the 8th grade was busy electing cheerleaders for the coming year: Judy Wise, Marilyn Wright, and Ruth Ann Kannegiesser were elected.
- This week at the Alamo: “The Life of Riley” starring William Bendix and “Tucson” starring Jimmy Lyon and “Hi, Neighbor” with Roy Acuff.
- The following were elected to the Burge Cemetery Board: President — Ralph Eckles; Sec. — George Elliott; Treas. — E.R. Breneman; and Trustees — J.O. Bell, Charles Nelson, C.E. Leedham, J.P. Hemmings, Elmer Wright, and Ralston Lynn.
1974
- This year’s Jr. Women’s fall conference was held at the Adventureland Inn in Des Moines. New London Juniors were represented by Delores Coleman, Paula Turner, and Shirley Chrisman.
- Spirit is … trying out for freshman cheerleading when you’re a senior, … jumping up and down the halls where Mr. Crawford and Mr. Wilson are right around the corner, … a hot sensation that is burning up your soul, … going to the homecoming pep rally on the 25th and the game and the dance on the 26th. (The Tiger Tribune — Sept. 26, 1974).
- E.E. Wessel, former New London resident and now a Seminole, FL resident, has been hospitalized, but is now home.
- Mr. and Mrs. S. P. Shores left last week after spending more than a week here in the home of their son, Bob Shores, who spent the time in Arkansas vacationing at his parents’ home. While here, Mrs. Shores looked after her granddaughters and Rocky worked in the drugstore.
1999
- The new school board member is Rhonda Mixon. She joins president Gary Schweitzer, VP Laurie Hempen, and board members Virginia Ekstrand and Dave Gates.
- Lucille Jennings is the winner of the Journal’s weekly football contest. She will receive $50.
- New London businesses advertising in the Journal: Casey’s, Jet Stop, New London Dental Care, Brad’s Implement & Auto Parts, Elliott Chapel, Frank A. Staley Construction, Danville State Savings Bank, Paul Revere Pizza, Weigert Appliance Service & Plumbing, Shores Pharmacy, Miller’s Plumbing & Heating, and Farmers Cooperatives.
- The New London Senior Citizens will meet at the New London Hall to go to Geode State Park for a picnic lunch.
- The Garden Club will meet Sept. 24 at Violet Locke’s home.

- Pictured in this week’s mystery photo are Lions Club members Duane Diener and Chuck Piper. Jr. Williams and Ruth Piper correctly identified them.
- Haley Rohdy, Camryn Lair, and Mya McLaughlin play soccer at the Burlington Rec Plex.
- This is Clark Elementary’s 50th birthday. Everyone is invited to an open house on Homecoming day on Friday, Oct. 17 to see how the school has changed.
