1949
- The Odd Fellows picnic was held at Perkins Park in Burlington. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Linken, Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Pennebaker and family, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Hanks and family, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Denney and family, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Warth and family, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Williams and family, and Tommy Ritchey.
- Mothers Club will meet Oct. 11 at the home of Mrs. Ernest Timmons.
- F.W. Walters returned home from Elgin, IL where he visited his sister and attended the railroad show in Chicago.
- Mrs. Virgil Simmons entertained Thursday afternoon in honor of her daughter, Carol Lee Flayharty’s 10th birthday. Nineteen girls attended.
- This week at the Alamo: “The Barkley’s of Broadway” starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers and “Big Jack” starring Wallace Beery and Marjorie Main.
1974
- Shari Mallams, drum majorette of the NLHS band, will represent the Tiger Marching Band at the Burlington Band Day as New London’s band queen.
- The VFW hall in New London and several places in Burlington and Fort Madison were raided by state vice squad and 12 people were arrested including two VFW employees who were later released on bond.
- The Tiger football team fell to Columbus Junction 44-0. Kerry Miller carried the ball 26 times gaining 100 yards. John Alden and Dave White recovered two fumbles for the Tigers.
- The band will march in the State Marching Band Contest in Wapello where they will trying for their 6th straight one.
- National Newspaper Week is a time to recognize the Journal staff: Evelyn Garmoe, Cindy Herrill, Merlin “Dauby” Daubendick, Steve Wick, and publisher Duane Griggs.
1999
- A new Optimist Club formed to serve New London area youth and community. Those attending the organizational meeting were Jeanne Koson, Steve Ort, Greg Mertens, James Fritz, Danny Cornell, Stan Edwards, John Blow, Charlie Clark, John Danielson, Ed Minard, Mark Shepherd, Mike Campbell, Eric Dean, Bob Cardoni, Jan Ireland, and Jens Lee.
- Obituary this week: Vera Breuer.
- Felecia Fuson has completed an internship with the Mt. Pleasant Municipal Utilities to fulfill the Field Experience requirement at Iowa Wesleyan College.
- Class of 1974 has their 25th class reunion. Since their last reunion, two members have died. They are Jo James Bires and Debbie Krier Myers.
2014
- The Methodist Church’s Fun and Fellowship group celebrated their 35th anniversary on Sept. 21.
- Clark Elementary turns 50. There will be an open house homecoming day on Friday, Oct. 17.
- Janet Miller Simmons will celebrate her 80th birthday at the VFW on Oct. 4.
