1949
- There were 53 relatives who enjoyed a meal at the New London Hall in honor of William Collins’ 82nd birthday. Some of the guests were s Mrs. Homer Raines, Mervin Raines, and Lettie and Mrs. Wes Shipley and Bob Shipley.
- Kindergarten for the town youngsters will start Monday Nov. 28, 1949. The country kids just finished 12 weeks on Nov. 22.
- The school board discussed whether they should have a girls’ basketball team. Only three schools in the SEI league have teams. They tabled the item until they have several issues resolved.
- The Jim Marshalls of Galesburg, IL returned home Sunday after visiting since Wednesday at the Dave Marshall and the Walker Locke homes.
- The summer kitchen of the Herman Prehm home was destroyed by fire. Mrs. Howard Anderson, Prehm’s daughter, unknowingly started the fire when she lit an oil burner to do washing.
- This week at the Alamo: “My Dream is Yours” starring Doris Day and Jack Carson and “Slattery’s Hurricane “ starring Richard Widmark and Linda Darnell and a Thanksgiving feature “Girls from Jones Beach” starring Ronald Reagan and Virginia Mayo.
1974
- The community Thanksgiving service will be held at the Methodist Church on Wednesday, Nov, 27 at 7:30 p.m.
- Individual firms in New London who are interested in buying the Civil Defense alerting equipment should know it will be selling at $139.
- In “a remember when” column, the juniors reminisced about the day they spent the whole period in sciences picking guppies off the floor after Ferlin broke Mr. Fietta’s aquarium.
- Another fond “remember when” was when everyone had gum on their nose because Mr. Wehrle caught them chewing gum.
- In another fun “remember when” was when Mrs. Skinner “spanked “Cindy and Shiree.
1999
- Approximately 174 people from SE Iowa turned out for the New London Chamber of Commerce Extravaganza banquet. The banquet was held at Pzazz! In Burlington.
- The New London school board met with city council and utility board members to explore what to do with the swimming pool. It seems that most residents want to keep it, but few are willing to pay the increased taxes it would need.
- The Jennifer Grove and Matthew York’s wedding announcement was in this week’s Journal.
2014
- The Masqued Tigers will present “Agatha Raisin and the Quiche of Death” on Nov. 21-22.
- Jennifer Loyd was approved as wrestling cheerleading sponsor by the school board.
- The following students were named to the SEISC All-Academic list: Brandi Allen, Bailey Beckman, Ashley Birdsell, Camyrn Blint, Josten Boyer, Hayley Krieger, Carlie Loyd, Katherine McAllister, Carson McSorley, Breanna Mettler, Emily Parks, and Kenadi Schulte.
