1949
- Mr. and Mrs. Fred Waters observed their 50th wedding anniversary on Dec. 20. It was in New London where their 10 children (7 boys, 3 girls) graduated from New London HS. Mrs. Waters and her 10 children also all graduated from the 8th grade with Jeanette Lynn as their teacher. All the children will be home for the celebration.
- Letters to Santa are from Blaine McNeil, Dayle Linder, and Linda Harper.
- Connie Rapien, Richard Craig, and Monica Simmons all made the honor roll.
- The P.E.O. will meet at Gertrude Elliott’s home for a Christmas party.
- The annual Christmas dinner and gift wrapping for the Garden Club will be Dec. 16. Mrs. Phil Westerbeck has prepared the music program.
- This week at the Alamo: “Father Was a Fullback” starring Fred MacMurray and Maureen O’Hara and “Edward, My Son” starring Spencer Tracy.
- Mrs. C. B. Noel Sr. has received word that her son, Harry, has received his new rank of Sergeant.
1974
- Three stations were broken into during the past week. They were Jim’s Economy Oil, McKinnon’s Inc., and Lee’s Shell. Earlier in the week the light office was broken into.
- A survey was taken at NLHS with the question “What do you think will be the biggest event that will affect your life in the coming year?”. Darcy Beckman, Dave Smith, and Len Wilson all said when they get their license.
- Mr. and Mrs. Terry Kilbourn, Susie and Ann, left Christmas evening to visit Mr. and Mrs. Jack Winton in Oklahoma.
- Mr. and Mrs. Tom Ritchey spent the weekend at the parental home of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Morningstar in Cedar Rapids.
- Robbie Wick and Timmy Noel are visiting Robbie’s grandparents, the Howard Winebrenners in Iowa City.
1999
- The NL Municipal Utilities Christmas Lighting Contest: 1st place ($100) - Dan & Joan Wegener; 2nd place ($75) - Richard Lane; 3rd place ($50) - Bud and Karen Brown; 4th place ($25) - James Coates; and 5th place ($15) - C. A. Williams. For most unique - ($35) - Ed & Felecia Blow; Hall of Fame ($50) - Teresa Harris; and Judges’ Award ($15 gift certificate) - Mike and Brigette DeWitt.
- Allison Brook Raub and Travis Wayne Lair’s wedding announcement in the Journal. They will marry Jan. 8 at the Presbyterian Church.
- Obituaries this week: Maurine Viebrock and Cora McDowell.
- Jerry and Freda McKinnon attend Jan Ireland’s graduation from Western Illinois University in Macomb, IL.
- Nic Chiri, Nathan Parks, and Todd Van Syoc finished their MS wrestling careers undefeated.
- Santa letters in this week’s Journal. Nick Fry asks for “good” presents, Dylan Saunders wants Star Wars toys, and Erika Beuter asks for make-up.
