1950
- Ralph, the six-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Carrol Johnson, was taken to Burlington to have a BB shot removed from his thumb. He was visiting his grandmother, Mrs. Eugene Martin, in Gladstone when the accident happened. He has returned to school.
- Robert Davey reported 17 fat hogs were stolen Friday night while he was at the basketball game in New London.
- Mrs. Williams has received word that 10 students have had their poems accepted for the National Poetry contest. The authors include Shirley Polluck, Marilyn Corrick, Bob Harper, Bob Reed, Peggy Putney, Ruby McKee, and Ardith Putney.
- New London will host the 3-night Henry County basketball tournament. The Tigers play Mt. Union in the first round.
- Call 164-R in New London for your heating needs. C.E. Mathers sells dependable Lennox furnaces.
- At the Alamo this week: “I Was a Male War Bride” starring Cary Grant and “Scene of the Crime” starring Van Johnson.
1975
- The New Londonnaires are having a bake sale on Saturday, Jan. 18 at Whitaker’s grocery.
- Ruth Peterson urges everyone that knows early family histories to get them to her so they can be included in the upcoming Centennial book.
- The Tigerettes came close to defeating Winfield-Mt. Union but fell short losing 90-74. Leading scorers were Diane Wilson who had 28, Shiree Davey had 24, and Barb Clark had 20.
- Wesley H. Totemeier, 78, a New London area farmer, died on Jan. 19. He leaves his wife and two children.
- Donna Jeane Rushill is engaged to Gerald Dingman of West Point. A June 6 wedding is planned.
2000
- NL Parks & Rec committee’s basketball court project in the city park has received an unexpected boost. Word got out that funds were needed and many stepped up. Major contributors were Design Engineering, Lightway Industries, Steve Aanes, Bob Shores, Elliott Chapel, and DeJaynes’ Manufacturing.
- Obituaries this week: Ruth Parrott, James Nichols, and Edith Pygott.
- Tiger girls win, boys fall to Pekin in basketball. Short bench beats Tiger grapplers at Fort Madison.
- At Darb’s Lanes on Dec. 20,1999, Kim Thornburg had the high individual series of 493.
2015
- Obituaries this week: Betty Jean Simpson, Meriel Watkins, and Walter F. Huddleston.
- New London boys BB defeats Wapello 84 - 46.
- NL’s Javis Krieger wrestles at Highland.
- Bill Warth, Bob Burkhart, and his brother Ronnie (deceased) shared a Dec. 19 birthday. In elementary school, their moms would rent the town hall for a joint birthday celebration with the boys and their friends. This past December, Bob and Bill and their wives celebrated in Mesa, AZ after more than 50 years apart on celebration day.
