New London City Council meets

The New London City Council met on April 8, 2024 in regular session. All members were present (Travis Benz by phone). After approval of the agenda, they opened a public hearing to take citizen questions and comments on the proposed property tax levy. Hearing none, they adjourned the public hearing at 6:03 p.m.
The regular meeting started at 6:20 p.m. There were no reports and no one addressed the Council in open forum. They approved the agenda and consent agenda.
In old business, the Council revisited the contract with Waste Management for garbage services. They liked the revisions by Waste Management and the City attorney. They would like an answer as to why the City and its employees are included as additional insured parties in the agreement. They will consider the agreement at the City’s Special meeting on April 29, 2024.
They then turned to new business. The took the following actions:
• Approved the reappointment of Carol Linkin to the Planning & Zoning Commission with a term ending April 30, 2029.
• Approved the engagement letter with Ahlers & Cooney for the commercial lot purchase agreement.
• Approved the engagement letter with Ahlers & Cooney for the Chad Sovern Contracting Inc. purchase, sale, and development agreement.
• Approved the engagement letter with Ahlers & Cooney to amend and restate the New London city-wide urban revitalization plan.
• Approved the estimate from Jacobsmeier Flooring to install an epoxy coating to the fire department floor for $4,125.00. Councilman Helmerson (Asst. Fire Chief) abstained.
• Approved Roma Edgington’s request to have six chickens (no roosters) at her residence at 302 N. Walnut St.
• Approved the estimate from Wiley’s Interiors for new flooring for the police station for $4,303.92. The City’s insurance company EMC estimated $912.19 for new flooring due to water damage. Kasi will share the estimate with EMC to see if they are willing to pay more.
• The Council discussed ‘Tis the Season’s request for road closures for parade, activities, and a street dance on July 27, 2024. Leslie Fraise and Judy Wiegard presented an outline of events for the day and asked the Council for consideration for certain street closures for the safety of the attendees.
The meeting adjourned at 6:43 p.m. There will be a Special City Council meeting on April 29, 2024 at 6:00 p.m. in the City Office. The next Regular City Council meeting is May 13, 2024 at 6:00 p.m. in the City Office.
