New London City Council to Improve Several Sidewalks
By Gina Anderson
Aug. 22, 2024 12:00 am
The New London City Council met in regular session on Aug. 12, 2024 with all members present. They approved the agenda and the consent agenda, and no one addressed the council in open forum.
Two reports were discussed. At the child care center, the block retaining wall on South Walnut Street is becoming an issue. Councilman Berner asked if the public works department could take a look at it. He also added that the heavy rains caused stormwater to come very close to the child care center’s front door. He felt that the storm drains should be looked at too.
The second report was concerning Outlaw Tees at 113 W. Main St. This business also had issues with water at the entrance. The public works department has been working for over a week to televise and jet the storm sewer main to find any issues that may have contributed to the flooding.
The council took the following actions in old business:
- Approved Resolution #435 — support of a property tax levy for emergency medical services/essential services in Henry County.
- Approved Cobb/Elliott Oil as the fuel provider for the city fuel pumps.
- Approved Nehring Construction’s quote of $6,752.03 to install new vinyl siding at the H. J. Nugen Library.
- Approved hiring Hickey Contracting to repair/replace sections of the sidewalk on West Madison Street, North Walnut Street, and South Elm Street with the city’s portion not to exceed $20,000. This work is being completed in cooperation with Alliant Energy. They are repairing areas they disturbed.
Another area of concern is the 400 and 500 blocks of West Adams Street. There is no subbase under the street. The council discussed what type of surface material would be best to use if the street is reconstructed.
The council also discussed the preliminary drawings for the sidewalk on the 300-600 blocks of S. Pine Street. Working with an engineer, the sidewalk will be on the flattest part of the right of way. The council agreed with the plan as presented and will continue with the project.
In new business, the council took the following actions:
- Approved the Community Service agreement between the city and the Red Flag Horseless Carriage Tour donating $500 to the organization for this year’s event on Sept. 28, 2024.
- Approved the quote of $16,070.95 from Electric Pump for a new computer for the wastewater treatment plant.
- Approved the reinvesting several CDs at the Danville State savings Bank.
The meeting adjourned at 7:05 p.m. The next regular city council meeting will be Sept. 9, 2024 at 6 p.m. in the city office.
