On Monday, Nov. 11, the New London School District held its annual observance of Veterans Day. Originally known as Armistice Day, this federal holiday is the one remaining holiday that actually occurs on its original date. The major hostilities of World War I formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. This day commemorates the service of all United States Veterans.
The day began in the MS/HS gymnasium with a breakfast served to New London Veterans and their families. Coffee, orange juice and a large variety of pastries gave everyone a chance to relax and visit a bit. The gym began to fill with students from Clark, the Middle School and High. Veterans and their families were given center frlor seats of honor.
The beginning of the ceremony is very traditional. However, this traditional beginning helps recognize the importance of the day. One hundred and six years have passed since Nov. 11, 1918 and thousands of men and women have served our country with honor and sacrifice.
Superintendent Wahls began with the Welcome and Introductions. Local VFW Post #7841 presented the Nation’s Colors after which the High School Choir sang the national anthem. Clark Elementary students led the Pledge of Allegiance. This year the guest speaker remained at her post but delivered the message of remembrance virtually. Lieutenant Junior Grade Katherine McAllister graduated from New London High School and then graduated from the Naval Academy in Annapolis. Her video depicted life in the navy as well as describing how important military service is to our nation and its freedom.
A favorite part of New London’s observance occurs when the HS Band plays the armed forces Medley. As the song of each military branch is played, New London’s veterans from that branch of service stand and are recognized.
The remembrance closes with a folding of the American flag while the meaning of each fold is read. Kennedy Herrick read each fold while Morgan Jones, Ava DeHart and Makynna Carpenter demonstrated the process. A moment of silence was held as Mr. Anderson played taps. The colors were then retired. School resumed with each member of the audience thinking about the future of our country and their place in its continued success.
