Coach Cori Reid and the Esports team have worked long and hard this Fall, practicing and competing in two games: Super Smash Bros Ultimate and SMITE. Esports meets at the District office in a backroom packed with computers and places for players to plan strategies. Coach Reid complimented the Smite team. They have shown great improvement in communicating and collaborating strategies.
Throughout the season, competition is usually virtual. At state, competition is face-to-face. The Fall season has three games in competition: Smash Bros, Smite and Rainbow Six Siege. Our New London team and coach did a bit of a marathon in order to compete.
On Wednesday, the team traveled to Marshalltown to compete in Smite. They returned to school to attend class on Thursday. The competition that day was Rainbow Six Siege. Up again early on Friday, they traveled back to Marshalltown to compete in Smash Bros. An additional feature of Esports state finals is that the competitions are streamed. Many students and fans were able to keep track of the play as the teams progressed through the brackets.
The results were Celebratory. Wednesday: New London’s Smite team placed Overall Third. Champion Greene County, Second Buchanan, Third New London, Fourth Lone Tree. Green County School District has 11,231 students and Buchanan has 10,523 students. Friday, New London’s Smash team placed Second Overall. Champion Lake Mills, Second New London, Third B-K, Fourth DNH. Lake Mills has 685 students.
Coach Reid is bursting with pride.
“Both teams gave it their all. New London students were outstanding in the way they competed and presented themselves and their school to the other competitors,” Reid said. “There was one senior, Lanie Szewczyk, who played on the Smite team. Three seniors, Josiah Denney, Lanie Szewczyk, and Reid Bell, played on the Smash Bros team. They will be missed next year. They played their hearts out this past week.”
Everyone will enjoy the Thanksgiving break coming up and hopefully get some R & R. Winter and Spring competition will begin after the holidays.
