Join the New London Lions Club for a 50th Anniversary Open House at the New London Community Building from 6 — 7:30 p.m. This group supports many community activities. A huge thank you is due to all its hard working members.
The Lions Club has a long history in New London. From information gathered from the Mount Pleasant News archives what is believed to be the first Lions Club disbanded in 1960. Within months of this event, New London business owners met and discussed the possibility or organizing a new civic-minded club. As nearly as can be determined today, the New London Lions Club replacement organization was chartered July 23, 1974. There are many historical records and photos available to review. Perhaps someone will find time in the future to delve into the details.
A photo of the 1985 Officers was found and reproduced for this article. A flyer from the Mount Pleasant Shopper, July 12, 194 noted the celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the club and listed the members. The Mount Pleasant and the New London Lions were very close. The Shopper carried the following about the groups.
“In the Beginning … On Oct. 5, 1971 the Mt. Pleasant Lions Club chartered. There appeared to be a desire to start a Lions Club in New London. After meeting with some people in New London, it was the opinion there was enough interest to start a club, so on July 23, 1974 there was a Charter Celebration at the New London High School. The New London Club was on its way. With the Guiding Lion, C.A. Williams, it started with 11 charter members and over the years has grown to its present membership at 26, with the guidance of the Mt. Pleasant Club. “
The current members of the New London Lions Club assists many community activities. They have been very supportive of the Tiger Pantry. The Lions continue to promote good vision for all ages. Our Lions are a “small but powerful” organization in our community. Take this opportunity to stop by and thank the members. Consider joining their ranks.
