The end of school is filled with field trips. One of the most popular is the annual Eighth Grade trip to Saint Louis. On Tuesday, May 6, the students began their bus ride at 6:30 a.m. Students were asked to be at school no later than 6 a. For many students, the trip was their first ride on a charter bus. The chaperones are very thankful the trip isn’t made in a school bus.
began Tuesday, May 6 and ended with visits to the City Museum and the Holocaust Museum. Tuesday night the students. An overnight stay at Drury Drury Inn at Union Station. The second day, a visit to the Zoo is followed by a long ride home. Fortunately a charter bus is used — not a school bus.
The first stop upon arriving in St. Louis is the City Museum. This innovative museum is housed in an old industrial section of the city. It once an old shoe warehouse, Paths wind indoors, outdoors, and underground creating a unique playground for adventurous visitors. The Museum attracts around 700,000 guests per year. New London students enjoyed sliding, jumping, climbing and playing the City Museum. It was a great way to work off the energy stored while riding the bus.
Back on the bus early Tuesday afternoon, everyone ate their sack lunch on the way to the Holocaust Museum. The tour of the museum began at 2. The St. Louis Kaplan Feldman Holocaust Museum’s mission is to "use the history and lessons of the Holocaust to reject hatred, promote understanding, and inspire change." For many of our New London students the pictures and information here make their lessons at school come alive.
The Drury Inn at Union Station was the hotel used by our students Tuesday night. For many students an overnight stay was a bit unreal. The Chaperones were challenged but everyone was very happy with the behavior of our children. A huge thank you is due these people who watch carefully and ensure the safety of all. Seven adults were responsible for 44 students. THANK YOU — Lauren Jones, Tori Kenel, Lindsay Wesley, Heather Sharp, Wyantt May and Arnie Anderson.
Wednesday, May 7 began with breakfast at hotel. Everyone arrived at the Zoo when it opened at 9 a.m. The day was spent enjoying all the exhibits offered at this renowned facility. The Saint Louis Zoo, officially known as the Saint Louis Zoological Park, is recognized as a leading zoo in animal management, research, conservation, and education. The zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The Zoo staff is dedicated to conserving animals here and around the world. Every worker cares about animals and creating a sustainable future for them. Conservation takes teamwork. From big actions like fieldwork and hands-on research, the everyday person can learn simple steps like putting up a bird feeder. The Zoo is dedicated to teaching how one can participate in conservation.
Students selected their own lunch at one of the zoo kiosks or the Lakeside Café. It was great fun to feed the fish while eating and relaxing outdoors above the lake. There is a picnic area outside the Zoo and after gathering for the class picture pizza was served and everyone boarded the bus to return to New London. The bus was scheduled to arrive at school between 9 and 10 p.m. While glad to be home, each person stored a particular memory of this trip for his or her lifetime.
