In 1951, the Bugg Nursing Home opened in New London. It was on Main Street and shared the block with the Christian Church. It was the old Lee Redfern house and had earlier been the Austin McDonald Funeral Home. But it was not the only nursing home in New London. The Shelton Nursing Home opened in 1955, north of the railroad tracks. Both had various owners but were in continuous operation until 1974.
As early as 1964 there was much discussion about the need for a nursing home that wasn’t a converted house. New London fathers finally stopped discussing and built a fifty-bed nursing home that was completed in the summer of 1975. When it opened, the first open house had between 400 and 500 attend, according to reporting in the Journal of the day.
That is the very facility we are here to celebrate on its 50 years of service to New London. It was a great addition then and remains so now.
The 50-year open house will be Saturday, Aug. 2 from 1-4 p.m. Hope to see you there!
