New London offers a one semester course entitled Technical Writing. The course description is a bit confounding. It studies the rhetorical techniques specifically oriented to industrial requirements. It applies expository patterns as incorporated within the report apparatus, including such specialized formats as process analysis, progress/lab reports, feasibility study, and the proposal. It also includes correspondence and application of basic library research skills. Course designed to meet specified career program requirements.
Under the direction of Mrs. Allison Lair, the course develops skills needed when students begin work in the real world. By choosing a community related project, the work becomes meaningful. The first semester group studied and wrote a grant to obtain a much-needed commercial refrigerator for the New London Tiger Pantry. The grant was submitted to the Enhance Henry County Community Foundation.
Result: A $7,000 grant was awarded to the New London Community School District for Food Pantry assistance.
The First Semester Technical Writing Class rates a long overdue recognition of their hard work as well as a huge thank you. A few students from the first semester class were able to visit the pantry and view the result of their success. Mrs. Laurie McBeth and Superintendent Chad Wahls joined them as they viewed the beautiful, spacious stainless steel addition to the pantry.
